Some backyards just have the bones for something special. Open space, a covered porch already in place, a view that stretches out past the fence line - this one had all of it. What it was missing was a hardscape that tied everything together and gave the homeowners a real reason to get outside and use it.
We built a 300 sq ft patio using Cambridge Onyx Natural pavers, and the material choice matters here. These pavers have a clean, stone-like texture with natural color variation that looks sharp without feeling overdone. They complement a modern farmhouse exterior really well - not too rustic, not too sleek. The darker border treatment framing the perimeter is a detail that pulls the whole layout together.
The built-in fire pit is the centerpiece. It sits right in the patio space, constructed with block that matches the paver aesthetic. Whether it's a quiet night by yourself or a full backyard gathering, that fire pit becomes the anchor of the space. It gives people a reason to gather and stay outside longer.
What we love about this kind of hardscaping work is how permanent it feels once it's done. No rotting wood, no warped decking. Pavers hold up season after season, they drain well, and if one ever gets damaged down the road, it can be replaced individually. It's a smart long-term investment for any homeowner who actually wants to use their outdoor space - not just look at it from inside.
