A front entrance does a lot of work. It's the first thing people see, and it sets the tone for the whole property. But a lot of homeowners don't want a bed full of annuals that need replanting every year or shrubs that demand constant trimming. The goal here was simple - build something that looks sharp without creating extra work.
Here's what we were working with: a flat, open front yard with a clear opportunity to anchor the entrance with something meaningful. We designed a rounded landscape bed using a combination of river rock border stones, golden gravel fill, compact shrubs, and ornamental grass. The natural stone address marker sits right in the center - functional and good-looking at the same time.
The rock border does more than just frame the bed. It keeps the gravel contained, defines the shape cleanly, and eliminates the need for edging. No mulch to refresh every spring. No weeds pushing through like they would in bare soil. The ornamental grasses add a little movement and texture without needing much attention at all. Low maintenance doesn't mean boring - it just means thinking through the materials before you dig.
We also worked in low-profile landscape lighting throughout the bed. Positioned around the address stone and plantings, the lights give the entrance a finished look after dark and make the address easy to spot from the road. That's the kind of detail that pulls a design together without overcomplicating it.
This is the kind of landscape design work we genuinely enjoy. It's not flashy - it's practical, clean, and built to hold up. When the hardscaping and plant selection are dialed in from the start, you end up with a space that looks great year after year without much intervention.
